Profile
The Borough of Fareham lies on the Solent coastline between the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth covering an area of almost 30 square miles and has a population of 108,000 people.
Whether you enjoy sports, entertainments, walking in the countryside, shopping, museums, or historic buildings; there are many attractions within the area to suit everyone’s interests.
Some of the better known historic buildings in the area include Portchester Castle, Titchfield Abbey and the Royal Armouries Fort Nelson. For walkers and nature lovers the Solent coastline, River Hamble and Titchfield Haven all offer opportunities to explore.
Fareham is also an important commercial and business centre. The Borough has the advantage of occupying a central position within south Hampshire between two cities. Fareham’s workforce is a skilled one in comparison to both national and regional averages and has higher than average proportions working in managerial and professional occupations.
The Borough has a diverse economy that is not dominated by particular sectors or by a single major employer. Office businesses are in the majority, although there is a significant group of large industrial employers. Smaller businesses predominate and the survival rate of local start-ups is high. There is evidence of concentrations of firms from particular industries, particularly the marine and IT sectors.
The main employment locations in the Borough are:
- Fareham town centre (Fareham Shopping Centre, West Street, High Street);
- North-east Fareham (Wickham Road, Broadcut, Wallington);
- South Fareham (Gosport Road, Newgate Lane);
- Cams Office Park, Fareham;
- Portchester (Murrills Estate, Castle Trading Estate);
- Park Gate/Segensworth (Park Gate Business Centre, Duncan Road, Segensworth Industrial Estates, Office for National Statistics/Eaton Aerospace, Kites Croft);
- Solent Business Park
- Hamble River Boatyards at Swanwick, Crableck and Warsash.
Park Gate/Segensworth and Whiteley, in particular, are highly accessible locations for business development in the Solent coastal belt.
Fareham has 5 hotels with a total of 343 bedrooms. The hotel stock here is dominated by two large 3 and 4 star hotels. Business users make up 62-70% of the custom of 3 and 4 start hotels. Weddings are the main weekend market, but other leisure markets include group tours and events as well as ferry and cruise passengers.
